Rocks squeezed out by Tavistock

TAVISTOCK – An attempted comeback by the Elora Rocks fell short as they were defeated 6-4 by the Tavistock Royals in Western Ontario Athletic Association senior AA men’s hockey play Saturday night at the Tavistock Recreation Centre.

After falling behind by a pair of goals in the first six minutes of the game, the Rocks cut the gap back to a single goal three times, but could never pull even.

Tavistock led 2-1 at the end of the first period and 5-3 after the second.

Spencer Gourlay had two goals and an assist for the Rocks while Chad Herron and Ben Piluk added single goals. Piluk, Justin Byers, Marc Sandwell, Mason Noble, Gavin Helle and Herron each had one assist.

Tavistock received goals from six players — Ray Munro, Zach Lorentz, Connor Bodnar, Mitch Schurink, Sean Leslie and Troy Williams. Deven Kropf, Williams, Munro, Leslie, Tristan Hohl, Schurink, Chad McIntosh, Lorentz and Geoff Killing each collected one assist.

The Royals outshot the Rocks 37-29. Gary Walser was tagged with the loss for Elora while Tim Porter was credited with the win for Tavistock.

Elora went 1-for-5 on its power play while Tavistock went 1-for-8.

The Rocks are 12th in the 13-team league at 2-14-0-3 with one game to go in their regular season. Tavistock completed its regular season at 7-13-0-0, tied for 10th with the Shallow Lake Crushers.

The Rocks are to complete their regular season Saturday with a game against the fourth-place Tillsonburg Thunder (12-3-0-3) at the Tillsonburg Community Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Elora will play in the senior A playoffs that are to include the bottom five teams in the standings.
