Ross, GCVI open field hockey season with shutout wins

GUELPH – The Ross Royals and Guelph CVI Green Gaels look set to be contenders in the District 4/10 high schools girls’ field hockey league again this season.

The Royals and Green Gaels each opened their league play with a pair of shutout wins Wednesday.

Ross and GCVI met in last year’s final with the Royals prevailing 2-0 for their first title win in 20 years, denying the Green Gaels their first ever field hockey title.

Both are eying this year’s crown after Ross blanked the Norwell Varsity Reds 6-0 and Centennial Spartans 4-0 at the University of Guelph’s Varsity Field while GCVI shut out the Centre Dufferin Royals 6-0 and Centre Wellington Falcons 2-0 at Centre Wellington.

GCVI and Ross are scheduled to meet Oct. 11 at 8:15 a.m. at Varsity Field to start the final day of the league’s regular season.

Amy Coppolino and Hilary Davidson scored twice each for Centennial while Gabby Durst added the other goal.

 

Ross 6 Norwell 0

Ross received goals from six players — Kaleigh Boyd, Brooke Frasson, Katelyn Fazzari, Natassja Dezwaan, Olivia Sarabura and Courtney Phillips.

 

Centre Dufferin 0 Centre Wellington 0

Scoreless tie.

 

Ross 4 Centennial 0

Kaleigh Boyd connected for a hat trick for Ross while Sarah Taylor scored on a penalty shot.

 

Guelph CVI 6 Centre Dufferin 0

Lorraine Vandermyden fired in four goals for GCVI while Jasmine Hasmatali and Maggie Smart also scored.

 

Guelph CVI 2 Centre Wellington 0

Lorraine Vandermyden and Amy Pike had a goal apiece for GCVI.
