Ross returning to OFSAA AAA girls’ rugby tourney

CAMBRIDGE – The reigning OFSAA champion Ross Royals are headed back to the provincial high school championship tournament.

The Royals locked up a spot in the AAA category of the Ontario high school girls’ rugby championship tournament Wednesday by winning a pair of games at the CWOSSA AAA tournament at Preston high school.

The Royals opened that tournament with a 68-0 win over the Waterloo CI Vikings and finished pool play with a come-from-behind 19-8 triumph over the Kitchener-Waterloo CVS Raiders (still known as KCI).

Jasmine Ing struck for two tries and two converts for the D10 champs while Maddie Gundy had two tries. Kiersten Bell added a try and two converts while seven other players scored one try apiece — Kennedy Frost, Darby Whittaker, Hana Stone, VanessaThongsomsanith, Ruth Agyemang, Emily Frasson and Aliesha Lewis.

Ing had two tries and two converts in the win over KCI while Agyemang added the other try.

By finishing first in their three-team pool, the Royals advance to meet the Brantford CI Mustangs in the CWOSA AAA girls’ final Friday.

As CWOSSA gets two entries in the provincial championship affair this year, both are assured of moving on to the OFSAA girls’ rugby tournament at Durham Region May 29 to 31.

BCI gained its spot in the CWOSSA AAA final by winning both of its pool games, defeating Waterloo-Oxford Crusaders of Baden 22-0 and Owen Sound Wolves 26-0.

To gain admission in the CWOSSA tournament, BCI won all four of its regular-season games and both of its playoff games in District 5 (Brant County) while Ross won all six of its league games and its two playoff games in the D4/10 loop.

Friday’s CWOSSA AAA final at Preston high school is set for 1 p.m.
