Ross Royals clinch top spot in field hockey

GUELPH – The Ross Royals secured a first-place finish on the final day of the District 4/10 high schools’ girls’ field hockey league’s regular season with a 3-2 victory over the Guelph CVI Green Gaels at the University of Guelph’s Varsity Field.

The game was a rematch of last year’s championship final.

Kaleigh Boyd, Sarah Taylor and Olivia Sarabura struck for single goals for the defending champion Royals.

Amy Pike scored both goals for GCVI.

Both teams added a 7-0 win over the Wellington Heights Wolverines of Mount Forest to complete their regular seasons.

Ross finish atop the standings at a perfect 8-0-0 while GCVI is second at 6-1-1. Bishop Macdonell Celtics are third at 5-1-2 while Centennial Spartans and Orangeville Bears are tied at 4-3-1, but Centennial will win the tie-breaker thanks to a 2-0 win over Orangeville Wednesday. Centre Dufferin Royals of Shelburne are sixth at 2-4-2 and they’re followed by Centre Wellington Falcons of Fergus at 2-5-1, Norwell Varsity Reds of Palmerston at 1-7-0 and Wellington Heights at 0-8-0.

The quarter-finals are set for Monday. Centre Dufferin and Bishop Mac are to meet at 2:30 p.m. at Varsity Field while GCVI and Centre Wellington are to meet there at 4 p.m. Orangeville and Centennial are to battle at Ross at 2:30 p.m. and Ross is to host Norwell at 4 p.m.

Sarah Taylor scored twice for Ross while single goals were added by Jessie Contini, Katelyn Fazzari, Julia Fazzari, Jasmine Fox and Abby Auger. Jordan Ronan picked up the shutout in net for the Royals.

Lorraine Vandermyden hit for a hat trick for GCVI while Maggie Smart scored twice. Amy Pike and Maddie Chimnery added single goals.

 

Bishop Macdonell 3 Norwell 0

Georgia Merriman led Bishop Mac with a pair of goals while Julia Billings scored the other one.

 

Centre Dufferin 1 Norwell 0

Morgan Bennington had the goal for Centre Dufferin while Shannan Armstrong was in net for the shutout.

 

Centennial 2 Orangeville 0

Hilary Davidson scored both goals for Centennial while Sarah Dykstra had the shutout.

 

Orangeville 1 Centre Wellington 0

Elly Erison scored the game’s only goal.

Samantha Tracey scored twice for Bishop Mac while Quinn Bellini and Sidney Claerbout chipped in with a goal apiece.
