Ross Royals make it two hoops wins in two days

GUELPH – The Ross Royals collected their second win in as many District 10 high school senior boys’ basketball outings this season as they downed the Bishop Macdonell Celtics 63-33 Wednesday at Bishop Mac.

The win came the same week the Royals set their roster for the season and came a day after a win at home over the St. James Lions.

“It’s a good start to our season,” Ross coach Bill Price said. “We didn’t really set our team because volleyball won District 10 and was in CWOSSA and we were waiting on a couple of guys. We only had a few practices and one guy had his wisdom teeth out so we didn’t have the team fully set until Monday just in terms of everybody practising together.”

Wednesday, the Royals used a big third quarter to put the Celtics away as they outscored their hosts 25-10 in that quarter. Ross led 17-11 after the first quarter, 28-15 at halftime and 53-25 at the end of the third quarter.

“We’ve got some size and we’ve got some speed,” Price said. “We’re just learning how to mix it together. And patience because we’re young. I kept a lot of Grade 11s this year.”

The Royals have eight Grade 11s on their roster.

“We kept more than usual, but they’re aggressive and they’re athletic,” Price said. “They just need to learn the game and especially the senior game. But they go in and they work hard and the Grade 12s and Grade 12-pluses that we have are a nice little mix.”

Ross did get all its players into the game.

“Both games we got everybody in and I’m happy about that,” Price said. “You get to work with some of the kids that need more time on the floor. We’re just working on learning the plays and executing them the way we want.”

Zaid Karsiem led the Royals with 18 points while Sebastian Furmige had 12, Khaled Djabo 11, Kent Vosper seven and Malcolm Bair six.

Kurt Sialana hit for 10 points for Bishop Mac while Matteo Furfaro netted nine, Jacob McWhirter had eight and Caelen Fraser chipped in with six.
