MISSISSAUGA – It’ll be gold.
The Ross Royals will play for gold Wednesday at the provincial high school OFSAA AAA girls’ rugby championship tournament at St. Francis Xavier high school in Mississauga.
Tuesday afternoon the second-seed Royals rallied to edge the third-seed Uxbridge Tigers 17-12 in semifinal play. The Tigers had led 12-10 at halftime.
Maddy Gundy, Michelle Hopkins and Kennedy Queen each scored a try for Ross while Anna Bernardi added a conversion.
Jenna Lawrence had one of the tries for Uxbridge while the scorer of the other one was not recorded.
The Royals are to play the top-seed Oakville Trafalgar Red Devils for the provincial crown Wednesday after the defending champions blanked the fourth-seed Mayfield Mavericks of Caledon 33-0 in the other semifinal. Oakville Trafalgar led 26-0 at halftime.
Taylor Black and Jaden Walker each scored two tries for Oakville Trafalgar and Kelly Hurd scored one. Gillian Groth kicked four conversions.
The gold-medal match is set for Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Xavier.
Between them, Ross and Oakville Trafalgar have won the last three provincial titles. Oakville Trafalgar won last year and in 2015 when it was a AAA/AAAA tournament while Ross won in 2016, the first year after OFSAA got rid of the AAAA category.
