Ross senior volleyball girls getting it together
GUELPH – The Ross Royals have recovered from their two consecutive losses with wins in three consecutive matches in District 10 high school senior girls’ volleyball play with a 3-1 win over the Lourdes Crusaders Thursday.
The defending league champion Royals won 25-14, 20-25, 25-11, 25-16.
The win streak puts Ross third in the league standings with a 4-2 record. The Guelph CVI Green Gaels lead at 6-0 while the Centennial Spartans are second at 5-1. Lourdes and the St. James Lions are tied for fourth at 3-3 while the Bishop Macdonell Celtics are sixth at 2-4, Centre Wellington Falcons seventh at 1-5 and Orangeville Bears eighth at 0-6.
“We have a potentially very strong team, but we’re young,” Ross coach Julie Stedman said. “We have a lot to work on as far as becoming a strong team, but we’re getting there. We’ve had a couple of moments where we could see the potential and it’s pretty awesome.”
Six on the Ross roster of 14 were with the championship-winning team last season: McKenzie Coole, Carly Denholm, Paisley Frasson, Sydney Klassen, Abby May, Sophie Thom and Michelle Wojdak.
The three victories for the Royals followed a pair of 3-0 losses as they were swept by Bishop Mac Nov. 29 and GCVI Dec. 5.
“The one against BM was not a good game,” Stedman said. “We were missing a key player, though, and it was us still feeling out where everybody should be and everybody kind of figuring everybody else out because everyone’s brand new, putting pieces of the puzzle together.
“The one against GC was a lot stronger and that’s a game where we start to see just how well we can do.”
After those losses, the Royals swept both Orangeville and perennial rival Centennial.
“The game against Centennial was just awesome,” Stedman said. “Watching these girls play, with that kind of defence they’re going to be tough to beat. So the potential is there — whether or not it comes together at the right time, that’s the question.”
