Ross takes a pair to finish first in senior volleyball

GUELPH — The Ross Royals claimed a pair of 3-1 victories on their home court Thursday to grab top spot in the District 10 high school senior girls’ volleyball league.

Due to the high number of games that needed to be rescheduled, the entire senior league gathered at Ross to complete their regular seasons with a total of nine matches and one of them counted as two matches.

The Royals defeated the St. James Lions 3-1 (25-19, 25-13, 17-25, 25-17) and the Centre Wellington Falcons 3-1 (25-8, 18-25, 25-8, 25-13) to lock in their spot in first place.

Ross finished in first at 13-1 and was followed by St. James at 12-2, Guelph CVI at 10-4, Centennial at 9-5, Orangeville and Lourdes both at 4-10, Bishop Mac at 3-11 and Centre Wellington at 1-13.

The playoffs are to start with Monday’s quarter-finals. Ross is to host Centre Wellington, Bishop Mac is to play at St. James, Centennial is to battle Orangeville at Centennial and Guelph CVI is to tangle with Lourdes at GCVI.

Quarter-final winners advance to Wednesday’s semifinals.

The championship match is slated for Feb. 17 at 8 p.m. at the University of Guelph.

Bishop Mac split a pair of matches to clinch a first-place finish.

The junior gathering was at Centennial and featured 10 matches.

Bishop Mac bounced back from a 3-2 (20-25, 24-26, 25-18, 25-13, 15-11) loss to GCVI with a 3-1 (25-16, 25-12, 25-27, 25-22) win over Lourdes.

The Celtics finished first at 11-3 while St. James and Centre Wellington were each at 10-4, Ross, Lourdes and Orangeville finished at 6-8, GCVI finished at 4-10 and Centennial finished at 3-11.

Junior playoffs are also to start Monday with the quarter-finals — Centennial at Bishop Mac, Orangeville at Centre Wellington, Lourdes at Ross and GCVI at St. James.
