Royals drop their fourth in a row

GUELPH – The losing streak for the Guelph Royals reached four games Friday night when they were handed an 8-5 setback by the Hamilton Cardinals in Intercounty Baseball League play at Hastings Stadium.

The Royals never led in the game, but twice reduced deficits to pull even. Hamilton scored two runs in the first inning before the Royals got them back in the third. The Cardinals collected three runs in the top of the fifth and the hosts collected three in the bottom of the inning.

Hamilton scored the runs that made the difference with two out in the top of the sixth. Jake Foden was walked and he went to second on a single by Chris Beer. An error by second baseman Matt Pilarczyk allowed Foden to score and Grant Arnold followed with a triple to score Beer. Arnold scored on a single by Laine Renaud.

Those runs meant reliever Edwin Javier took the loss, his second in as many games. Jorge de la Cruz started for the Royals and yielded five earned runs off four hits and five walks in 4 1/3 innings. He had one strikeout.

Javier pitched the remainder of the game, holding Hamilton to three runs, one earned, off six hits and two walks. He had nine strikeouts.

Chris Lazar started and picked up the win for Hamilton by limiting the Royals to five runs, three earned, off eight hits and no walks in 5 2/3 innings. He had five strikeouts. Justin Snow and Arman Lakhani pitched in relief with Lakhani getting a save. They combined to keep Guelph scoreless in 3 1/3 innings. Snow allowed two hits and neither walked a batter. Snow had two strikeouts and Lakhani had one.

At the plate, Adam Rossit and Josh Garton each hit three singles for the Royals while Pilarczyk had two singles and Brendan Keys hit a double. Sean Reilly hit a single.

Jake Chiaravalle hit a double and two singles for Hamilton while Arnold smacked two triples and Renaud hit two singles.

The Cardinals square their record at 4-4 with the win while the Royals fall to 3-6.

The Royals are to host the Barrie Baycats (5-4) Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hastings Stadium and play the league-leading Kitchener Panthers (9-3) Sunday at 2 p.m. at Kitchener’s Jack Couch Park.
