Schnarr’s shootout goal helps Storm top Erie

GUELPH – Nate Schnarr’s goal in a shootout lifted the Guelph Storm to a 4-3 victory over the Erie Otters Friday night in OHL play at the Sleeman Centre.

Schnarr was the only player to score in the shootout.

The goal preserved the win for the Storm as the hosts had led 2-0 with just over four minutes to go in the second period. However, the Otters had rallied to tie it 2-2 with a pair of goals 14 seconds apart later in the period. Guelph, though, scored with 1:43 to go in the period to carry a 3-2 lead into the third.

Erie forced overtime with a goal early in the third.

The Storm’s Barret Kirwin, Garrett McFadden and Cedric Ralph scored the goals in regulation time while Liam Hawel had two assists and Ryan Merkley and James McEwan had one each.

Jordan Sambrook scored twice for Erie while Cade Robinson had the other goal. Christian Girhiny assisted on two of the goals while Robinson, Aidan Timmermans, Alex Gritz and Taylor Raddysh each had one assist.

Anthony Popovich picked up the win in net for the Storm while Tony Timpano was charged with the loss for Erie.

The Storm was outshot 36-26 and went 1-for-4 on the power play while Erie went 1-for-6.

The win was the third in four games for the Storm (6-6-0-1) while the loss put the brakes on a three-game winning streak for the Otters (5-6-1-1).

The teams are to play again Saturday at the Erie Insurance Arena. Game time is 7 p.m.
