Seven Junior Gryphons picked in OHL draft

GUELPH – The selection of centre Logan Morrison in the first round of the Ontario Hockey League draft signaled the start of a great draft for the Guelph Minor Hockey Association’s Junior Gryphons minor midget AAA squad.

By the time the 20 OHL teams had finished their 15-round draft, a total of 300 players had been selected and seven of them were Junior Gryphons.

Morrison was selected in the first round, 18th overall, by the Hamilton Bulldogs.

Junior Gryphon teammates were selected back-to-back in the fourth round with left winger Brody Waters going to the Owen Sound Attack 61st overall and goaltender Christian Linton going to the Flint Firebirds 62nd overall.

The next Junior Gryph selected was also picked by Flint as defenceman Jack Harper was picked in the seventh round, 122nd overall.

Another Junior Gryphon was selected with the very next pick as right winger Jackson Kirk was taken by the Peterborough Petes 123rd overall.

Hamilton took another Junior Gryph in the ninth round, 178th overall, with the selection of left winger Andrew Britton.

The Guelph Storm kept right winger Joseph Marra at home with his selection in the 13th round, 247th overall.

Morrison, 5-foot-10 and 142 pounds, had 32 goals, 42 assists and 22 penalty minutes in 33 games in the SCTA (South-Central AAA) league this season. The Guelph native also had four goals and two assists in four games in the OHL Cup Showcase tournament and played two games in the junior B Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League with the Guelph Hurricanes.

Waters, from Heidelberg, had 17 goals, 32 assists and 40 penalty minutes in 35 SCTA games with the Junior Gryphs and three goals and two assists at the OHL Cup. The 6-foot, 163-pounder also played a game in the GOJHL with the Elmira Sugar Kings.

Linton, who is 6-foot-1, 199 pounds and hails from Elora, had a 2.80 goals-against average and two shutouts in 16 SCTA games with the Junior Gryphs. He also had a 2.01 GAA and .935 save percentage in two games at the OHL Cup.

Harper, a 5-foot-9, 157-pound Guelph native, had 12 goals, 24 assists and 12 penalty minutes in 35 SCTA games and an assist and four penalty minutes in the OHL Cup. He also played three GOJHL games with the Guelph Hurricanes.

The 5-foot-11, 164-pound Kirk, from Alma, had 26 goals, 25 assists and 28 penalty minutes in 31 SCTA games and two goals and four assists in the OHL Cup. He played a pair of GOJHL games with the Canes.

Britton, a 6-foot, 146-pounder from Guelph, had 19 goals, 25 assists and 26 penalty minutes in 36 SCTA games and he also picked up three assists and eight penalty minutes in the OHL Cup.

The 5-foot-6, 168-pound Marra had 13 goals, 16 assists and 10 penalty minutes in 36 SCTA games and one goal and four penalty minutes in the OHL Cup.

A total of 17 Junior Gryphons were eligible for the draft.

Morrison was the first Guelph minor midget AAA player to be taken in the first round since centre Austen Keating was picked 16th overall by the Ottawa 67’s in the 2015 draft.

The seven Junior Gryphons selected surpassed the 2014 total of six – centre Connor Bunnaman and defenceman Sean Allen by Kitchener, centre Giordano Finoro by Barrie, netminder Liam Devine by Oshawa, left winger Tyler Biles by Windsor and right winger Noah Cameron by the Storm.
