Shutout wins put Falcons in CWOSSA semifinals
CAMBRIDGE – The District 10 champion Centre Wellington Falcons skated to two more shutout victories as they opened the CWOSSA high school girls AAA hockey championship tournament at the Hespeler Memorial Arena Tuesday.
The Falcons won both of their pool-play games as they blanked the Elmira Lancers 1-0 and the Owen Sound Wolves 3-0.
Scoring details were not reported for any game at the tournament.
Faith Mitchell recorded the shutouts in the Centre Wellington net.
Elmira shut out Owen Sound 4-0 in the other game in the pool to claim second place and join Centre Wellington in Wednesday’s semifinals.
The other pool needed the tie-breaking formula to decide which teams advanced after all three had a win and a loss Tuesday.
St. Mary’s Eagles of Kitchener defeated the Waterloo-Oxford Crusaders of Baden 3-1. Waterloo-Oxford bounced back with a 4-3 win over the Brantford CI Mustangs who then edged St. Mary’s 1-0.
Waterloo-Oxford ended up being the odd school out as the Crusaders yielded one more goal than they scored while St. Mary’s scored one more than they gave up to finish first in the pool. Brantford CI scored the same number of goals as they had scored on them.
Centre Wellington is to play Brantford CI in a semifinal Wednesday at 9 a.m. while the other semifinal between St. Mary’s and Elmira is to go at 9:30 a.m. Winners advance to the 1 p.m. final.
