Silver for Bishop Mac at provincial AA tourney
HUNTSVILLE – The District 10-champion Bishop Macdonell Celtics finished as silver medalists at the OFSAA provincial high schools girls’ AA basketball championship tournament Saturday.
The third-seed Celtics were handed a 52-42 setback by the top-seed Frontenac Falcons of Kingston in the gold-medal match.
The Celtics led the championship game 8-4 at the end of the first quarter before Frontenac squeezed ahead 21-20 by halftime. The Falcons stretched their lead to 40-31 by the end of the third quarter.
Grace Drewry led Bishop Mac with 11 points while Aaliyah Edwards had 25 points for Frontenac.
The 42 points scored by Bishop Mac was the most scored against Frontenac in a single game at the tournament. The Falcons outscored their opponents 295-152 in five games in the tournament.
Earlier Saturday, Bishop Mac advanced to the gold-medal match with a 62-54 win over third-seed Lo-Ellen Park Knights of Sudbury in the semifinals while Frontenac dropped fourth-seed Notre Dame Fighting Irish of Burlington 60-26. Drewry had 19 points for the Celtics.
Lo-Ellen Park won the bronze-medal game 38-25 over Notre Dame.
Ninth-seed St. Michael’s Warriors of Stratford won the consolation final 62-28 over 11th-seed Huntsville Hoyas.
