Silvercreeks tumble to Port Dover

PORT DOVER – The Guelph Silvercreeks committed five errors as they were handed a 10-4 setback by the Port Dover Clippers in Central Ontario Junior Baseball League play Sunday night at Port Dover.

The Creeks never led in the game as they suffered their second consecutive loss. After Port Dover scored single runs in the first and third innings, the locals pulled even with two in the top of the fifth. Jake Malyk reached base on an error, was singled to third by Joey Hasson and scored on a Nathan Laird sacrifice fly. Brandon Arsenault followed with a single that sent Hasson to third and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Trystan Dennie.

However, the Clippers regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning and added four more in the sixth to pull away. The teams scored two runs apiece in the seventh.

Cody Graham hit two doubles for the Creeks while Laird had a double and a single. Getting two singles apiece were Arsenault and Hardie while Stephen Whalen and Hasson each hit one single.

Peter Zytner started for the Creeks and he tossed two innings, giving up an earned run off three hits. Liam Rivard worked two innings and yielded an earned run off five hits. Garret Morgan surrendered six earned runs off five hits and four walks in 1 1/3 innings before being relieved by Tyler MacKillop who gave up an earned run off one hit in 1 2/3 innings. Luke Merritt pitched the final inning and kept Port Dover hitless in that inning.

The result leaves the Creeks at 13-4-0 and Port Dover at 6-11-0.

The Creeks are to play the Stratford Nationals (9-5-1) at Stratford Tuesday night and Brantford Junior Red Sox (7-10-1) at Brantford’s Anderson Stadium Aug. 9 to complete their regular season.
