Six Nations turns on power late to edge Thistles

ELORA – A pair of power-play goals in the final six and a half minutes of the game secured a 12-9 victory for the Six Nations Warriors over the Fergus Thistles in Ontario junior C lacrosse league play at the Elora and District Community Centre Thursday night.

Three goals in a span of just over three minutes put the Thistles ahead 3-1 before the game was eight minutes old. However, Six Nations rallied and Cecil Montour’s goal five minutes into the second period put the Warriors ahead for good.

The teams were tied 6-6 at the end of the first period and Six Nations led 9-7 at the end of the second.

Six Nations outshot Fergus 58-37 and went 2-for-7 on their power play while the Thistles went 4-for-15 in the chippy game.

Brett Harrison and Dean Sealey each recorded hat tricks for the Thistles while Mitchell Bernier scored twice and McCaiden Dixon added a single goal. Justin Beaulieu had four assists while Mitchell Daw and Adam Lantz each had three, Sealey and Bernier had two apiece and Austin Flaherty, Scott Stovel, Harrison and Curtis Hall each had one.

Monture had a hat trick for Six Nations while Ryan Johnson and Marshall Powless tallied twice each and single goals were netted by Trent Martin, Todd Thomas Jr., Bronson Hill, Riley Jamieson and Jaxon Martin. Trent Martin and Johnson each had four assists while Jaxon Martin had two and Adam Martin, Monture, Powless, Owen Martin and Daris Anderson each had one.

Jackson Miller picked up the win in net for Six Nations while Bill Wilson took the loss for Fergus.

With the win, Six Nations remains the only undefeated team in the league as the Warriors have won all seven of their games. The Thistles are at 4-2-0, the loss being their second in a row.

The teams are to meet again June 1 at Caledonia. Game time is 8 p.m.
