Spartans seniors pull out opening victory in fourth quarter

Rob Massey, Guelph Sports Journal

GUELPH – The Centennial Spartans turned in a strong fourth quarter to upend the Lourdes Crusaders 60-44 on the opening day of the District 10 high school senior boys’ basketball league’s regular season Tuesday.

“First game and we still have some things to work out, but I can’t fault them for a lack of effort,” Centennial coach Rob Conroy said. “They played really hard.”

The Spartans scored 19 points in the final quarter and while the host Crusaders scored four.

“We got some turnovers and made some shots,” Conway said. “It was a good game on both sides. Lourdes played great.”

The game had been a close affair until the fourth quarter as Centennial led 17-15 at the end of the first quarter, 34-30 at the half and 41-40 after the third quarter.

Davin Ramdath led the Spartans with 15 points while Cole Godman had 12, Harris Schaubel netted 10 and Jake Warywoda collected eight.

Jacob Porcellato had a game-high 24 points for Lourdes while Will Vandenheuvel contributed nine.

The first game of a season can point out the things that need to be worked on and usually there’s a lot. The teams on the court in February preparing for playoffs will be far improved from the teams on the court on opening day.

“We’ve just got to keep with our systems and keep working hard,” Conroy said.
