Spartans will finish in top two in senior volleyball

GUELPH – The Centennial Spartans clinched a finish in the top two in the District 10 high school senior girls’ volleyball league with a 3-1 victory over the Ross Royals Thursday.

That result left the Spartans with three more wins than third-place Ross with two matches left on the regular season, both after a two-week break for exams.

Centennial won 25-20, 23-25, 25-18, 25-16.

The Guelph CVI Green Gaels are also assured of finishing in the top two as they lead the league at a perfect 12-0. Centennial’s second at 10-2, Ross third at 7-5, Bishop Macdonell Celtics and St. James Lions tied for fourth at 6-6, Lourdes Crusaders sixth at 4-8, Centre Wellington Falcons seventh at 3-9 and Orangeville Bears eighth at 0-12.

A win by GCVI or a loss by Centennial in either of their two remaining games will give the Gaels first and the Spartans second. They’re to battle in their final match of the regular season Feb. 8 at Centennial.

The playoffs are to start with the quarter-finals Feb. 12.
