Robert Wickens third in DTM series standings
NURBURG, Germany — Robert Wickens of Guelph fell to third in the German DTM series standing on the weekend at the legendary Nurburgring ciruit.
Wickens was ninth in Saturday’s 30-lap race on the 3.629-kilometre course in his SILBERPFEIL Energy Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM, finishing 32.197 seconds behind the winner, Marco Wittmann of Germany in a BMW M4 DTM.
Sunday, Wickens was 13th in a 43-lap race won by Edoardo Mortara of Italy in an Audi RS5 DTM. Mortara finished 32.446 seconds ahead of Wickens.
The race winners are the two drivers ahead of Wickens in the standings. Wittmann leads with 170 points while Mortara is second at 137 and Wickens third at 120. Audi’s Jamie Green of Britain is fourth at 199 and Britain’s Paul di Resta of Mercedes is fifth at 100.
Wickens has five wins in 62 races in his DTM career with two of the victories coming this year. He’s also finished on the podium 11 times and started from pole position four times.
There are two race meetings to go this season with two races at each meeting.
The series is to race at the 4.381-km Hungaoring in Budapest, Hungary, Sept. 23 to 25 and at the 4.574-km Hockenheimring in Hockenheim, Germany, Oct. 14 to 16.
Guelph Oaks OSL squad ties one on with Club Italia
GUELPH — The Guelph Oaks battled Club Italia to a 2-2 standoff in Ontario Soccer League South Region play Sunday at Centennial Bowl.
Luke Humphrey and Maziar Hamad collected a goal apiece for the Oaks while Alex Makubuya scored both goals for Club Italia.
It was the second meeting between the teams in five days as Club Italia had won 1-0 at Niagara Falls Wednesday. Makubuya scored the game’s only goal.
With two games left on their schedule, both on the road, the Oaks are second in the 10-team league at 10-4-2. They’re two points behind Burlington Clash City (11-5-1) and one ahead of Club Italia (9-3-4).
The Oaks are to play Caledon (8-5-3) at Caledon Thursday night.
Guelph Rangers blanked by HNNK Dalmacija in OSL play
OAKVILLE – The Guelph Rangers suffered a 2-0 loss to HNNK Dalmacija in Ontario Soccer League South Premier play Sunday at River Oaks Park.
Jeffrey Da Torre and Dean Maimonis scored for Dalmacija.
The Rangers are seventh in the nine-team league at 5-7-1 while Dalmacija is fourth at 6-6-1.
The eighth- and ninth-placed teams will be relegated at the end of the season. With three games to go in their season, the Rangers are four points ahead of eighth-place Ebony Juniors (4-9-0) and six points up on ninth-place Wisla United (3-8-1).
The Rangers are to host Lakeshore United at Eastview Park Thursday at 8:30 p.m., play Lakeshore United (6-5-1) at Mississauga’s Huron Park Monday at 8:45 p.m. and host HNNK Livno (8-4-0) at the Gryphon Soccer Complex Sept. 23 at 9 p.m.
