Junior Gryphons capture Tri-County Bowen bantam crown

GUELPH – The Guelph Junior Gryphons captured the Tri-County Bowen bantam league championship with a 7-2 victory over the Halton Hills Thunder Wednesday night at the West End arena.

The win came in the fifth-game of the six-point series and gave the Junior Gryphs a 6-4 win in the series.

The Junior Gryphs had opened the series with a pair of wins as they defeated Halton Hills 4-1 at Georgetown March 15 and 7-3 at the West End arena Saturday. The Thunder responded with a pair of wins at Georgetown as they won 5-4 Monday and 2-1 Tuesday to force a fifth game.

The Junior Gryphs will complete their season this weekend at the Lake Placid tournament. They’re to play Black Ice Hockey of Waterbury, Vermont, and Malone 46’s Friday and Norfolk-Norwood Saturday in the tournament’s preliminary round.

 

Junior Gryphons novice B girls blank Grand River Mustangs

GUELPH – The Guelph Junior Gryphons opened their Lower Lakes Female Hockey League Central novice B playoff series with the Grand River Mustangs with a 4-0 win Wednesday night at the West End arena.

The game was the first of a four-point series and the win gave Guelph a 2-0 lead.

Second game of the series is set for Thursday at the Elora and District Community Centre. Game time is 6 p.m.

If a third game is needed, it’s to be played Sunday at 3:45 p.m. at the West End arena.

Winner of the series gains a berth in the LLFHL’s championship weekend March 31 to April 2 at North York.

 

Junior Gryphons atom B girls ousted from league playoffs

GUELPH – The Guelph Junior Gryphons saw their Lower Lakes Female Hockey League season come to an end Wednesday night at the Gryphon Centre when they were edged 2-1 by the Wilmot Wolverines.

The win gave Wilmot a 4-0 victory in the four-point series and a berth in the LLFHL’s championship weekend at North York March 31 to April 2.

Wilmot had opened the series with a 5-1 win at Baden Sunday.

However, the loss didn’t end Guelph’s season as the Junior Gryphs have qualified for the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association’s championship tournament April 7 to 9 at Vaughan.

The Junior Gryphs are to play the Ancaster Avalanche, Kingston Ice Wolves and Wilmot in the preliminary round of the provincial tournament.
