St. Catharines moves to Golden Horseshoe final

NIAGARA FALLS – The St. Catharines Falcons advanced to the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Golden Horseshoe Conference final with a 2-1 win over the Niagara Falls Canucks Sunday night at the Gale Centre.

The win gave St. Catharines a 4-2 victory in the best-of-seven conference semifinal. They’ll play the Caledonia Corvairs in the conference final.

Both goals for St. Catharines came on the power play, the Falcons had six of them, while Niagara Falls was scoreless on its four power plays.

The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period and Greg DiTomaso fired in the series winner for the Falcons at 14:40 of the second.

Ted Davis had opened the scoring for the Canucks at 5:15 of the first and St. Catharines pulled even less than a minute and a half later on a goal by Tanner Ferreira.

Niagara Falls outshot St. Catharines 34-31 including a 15-7 advantage in the third period when the Canucks pressed to get the equalizer.

Owen Savory was the winning goalie for St. Catharines while Zach Moore took the loss for Niagara Falls.

The Golden Horseshoe final with Caledonia is to start Wednesday at Caledonia.
