St. James captures CWOSSA AA senior girls’ volleyball title

BRANTFORD –The St. James Lions gained a berth in the OFSAA AA girls’ volleyball championship tournament by capturing the CWOSSA senior championship.

The Lions finished atop their pool by winning both matches by 2-0 scores. St. James defeated the Galt Ghosts of Cambridge 25-14, 25-21 and Holy Trinity Titans of Simcoe 25-21, 25-15 to advance to the semifinals where they beat the Norwell Varsity Reds of Palmerston 2-0 (25-18, 25-13).

The Lions also swept the final, taking three games from the St. David Celtics of Waterloo. St. James won 25-19, 25-21, 26-24.

Norwell had advanced to the semifinals after splitting their pool play matches. The Varsity Reds defeated the Saugeen Royals of Port Elgin 2-0 (25-15, 25-23) and lost 2-0 (25-15, 25-10) to St. David.

By winning the title, the Lions move on to the OFSAA provincial AA tournament at Belleville. It’s set for March 6 to 8.

The Bishop Macdonell Celtics reached the semifinals in the CWOSSA AA junior tournament after splitting their pool play matches. The Celtics lost 2-0 (25-14, 25-17) to the Glenview Park Panthers of Waterloo and defeated the Simcoe Sabres 2-0 (25-23, 25-14).

Norwell also reached the junior semifinals by splitting their pool play matches. The Varsity Reds defeated the St. Mary’s Mustangs of Owen Sound 2-0 (25-10, 25-22) and lost 2-0 (25-15, 27-25) to the Paris Panthers.


The John F. Ross Royals suffered a pair of losses at the CWOSSA AAA senior girls’ volleyball tournament at Waterloo.

The Royals were defeated 2-0 by both the Huron Heights and Jacob Hespeler Hawks in pool play at the University of Waterloo. Huron Heights won 25-11, 25-18 and Jacob Hespeler prevailed 25-23, 25-14. The losses prevented Ross from advancing to the playoff round.

Jacob Hespeler went on to win the CWOSSA title with a 3-2 victory over Forest Heights in the final. The Hawks won that match 19-25, 25-17, 17-25, 25-13, 15-6.

The Orangeville Bears were District 10 representatives in the CWOSSA AAA junior girls’ tournament and they were also ousted after two losses in pool play.

The Bears were beaten 2-0 by Sir John A. Macdonald and 2-0 by Cameron Heights. SJAM won 25-16, 25-12 and Cameron Heights won 25-12, 25-15.

Resurrection claimed the junior title by beating Forest Heights 3-2 (25-19, 25-17, 22-25, 19-25, 15-12).


The Emmanuel Christian Eagles of Fergus suffered three losses at the CWOSSA A junior tournament at Breslau. The Eagles lost 2-0 (25-11, 25-19) to the Père-René-de-Galinée Knights of Cambridge, 2-0 (25-11, 25-23) to the Delhi Raiders and 2-0 (25-16, 25-20) to the Walkerton River Hawks.
