St. James in consolation semifinals in AA volleyball, too

BELLEVILLE – The St. James Lions remained alive in the OFSAA provincial high school AA girls’ volleyball championship tournament Tuesday when they defeated Sydenham Golden Eagles 2-1 in the consolation quarter-finals.

The 12th-seed Lions won 26-24, 11-25, 25-17 over seventh-seed Sydenham to move to a consolation semifinal date with 11th-seed Lockerby Vikings of Sudbury Wednesday at 9 a.m.

The other consolation semifinal pits fifth-seed Father Michael McGivney Magic of Markham against eighth-seed College Avenue Knights of Woodstock.

The consolation final is scheduled for 1 p.m.

The Lions had finished the preliminary pool play in fourth place in Pool C with a 1-3 record. Tuesday St. James completed pool play with losses to second-seed Corpus Christi Longhorns of Burlington and 15th-seed Silverthorn Spartans of Etobicoke. Corpus Christi won 25-12, 25-20 and Silverthorn won 25-19, 25-23.

Both Corpus Christi and Silverthorn are in the championship round semifinals set for Wednesday at 11 a.m. Corpus Christi is to play sixth-seed St. Mary Crusaders of Hamilton while Silverthorn is to battle top-seed Riverside Rebels of Windsor. Losers will meet in the bronze-medal match at 3 p.m., winners in the gold-medal match at 5 p.m.
