St. James hangs on for senior hoops’ win

GUELPH – The St. James Lions decided they weren’t really in a giving mood after all in their District 10 high school senior boys’ basketball game Tuesday against the Guelph CVI Green Gaels.

After seeing a 20-point lead in the second half shrink to a one-point advantage by the end of the third quarter, the Lions buckled down a little to eke out a 66-63 win.

The Lions had led 20-9 at the end of the first quarter and got that lead up to 20 points before the Gaels started to chip away at it and managed to get the gap down to 16 points at halftime – 37-21. GCVI kept coming on their home court in the third quarter, narrowing the margin to 44-43 by the end of the quarter.

But St. James came out strong in the final quarter and seven points from Matt Sanvido helped give the Lions some breathing room. However, the Gaels didn’t go down easily, closing the distance to the Lions to three points in the final seconds, but they just couldn’t pull even.

Sanvido led St. James with a game-high 30 points while Alex Garbuio had 15 and Aidan Feeney netted 14.

Ben Tofil had 21 for GCVI with 15 going to Kyle Kush and 13 to Aiden Cvetich.
