St. James Lions in AA hoops consolation semifinals

SAULT STE. MARIE – The St. James Lions advanced to the consolation semifinals at the OFSAA provincial high school AA boys’ basketball championship tournament with a win and a loss Tuesday.

The 10th-seed Lions fell out of the championship round with a 74-43 loss to fifth-seed St. Francis Phoenix of St. Catharines in the second round.

The teams were tied 11-11 at the end of the first quarter before St. Francis pulled out to a 32-25 lead at halftime then put the game away in the third quarter as they were up 57-30 by the end of the quarter.

Alex Durigon collected 12 points for St. James.

That loss dropped the Lions into the consolation round. In the consolation quarter-finals, St. James slipped by 13th-seed St. Joseph’s Jaguars of Barrie 65-58.

St. Joseph’s led 14-13 at the end of the first quarter and 29-28 at halftime before the Lions surged ahead 47-43 by the end of the third quarter.

Jeff Morales had 24 points for St. James.

St. James is to play ninth-seed Lasalle Lancers of Sudbury in the consolation semifinals Wednesday at 9 a.m. while 11th-seed Crescent Coyotes of Toronto and 19th-seed Saint-Famille Cougars of Mississauga are to clash in the other consolation semifinal. The consolation final is slated for 4 p.m.

The championship round semifinals are set for Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. and they pit first-seed Ashbury College Colts of Ottawa against fourth-seed Frontenac Falcons of Kingston and third-seed Kennedy Clippers of Windsor against second-seed Thornlea Thunder of Thornhill. Semifinal losers are to play in the bronze-medal game at 6 p.m. while the winners are to meet in the gold-medal match at 8 p.m.
