Staer Nathan claims Milton triathlon victory

MILTON – Mikael Staer Nathan of Toronto captured the victory in the Milton Triathlon Sunday as he won the opening event of the Subaru Triathlon Series 2018 season.

Staer Nathan completed the sprint triathlon in one hour, 20 minutes and 38.2 seconds to finish over four minutes ahead of second-placed Peter Newhook of Toronto who recorded a time of 1:24:44.5.

Thomas Bene of Toronto was third at 1:24:51.8 and Aaron DeJong of Waterloo was fourth at 1:25:28.3

Former university running star Tamara Jewett of Toronto was top female finisher as she was fifth at 1:27:15.3.

Cate Skain of the Guelph Triathlon Project was 22nd overall and second female to finish as she registered a time of 1:32:32.8. She won the female 20-24 class.

Skain was followed across the line in 23rd by Guelph’s Sasha Menegotto in 1:32:51.9. He was first in the male 19-and-under class.

Luke McKenzie of Guelph was 30th in 1:33:14.2.

Other locals in the event included Jack Bone (1:36:14.14), Michael Bales (1:43:59.2), Andrew MacKay (1:46:33.9), Simon Leclerc (1:49:21.5), Jeff Moisan (1:50:11.5), Benedicte Monette (2:00:21.3), Dan Sherman (2:08:10.4), Natalie McDonald (2:21:51.3), Sarah Lima (2:25:33.3), Catherine Sullivan (2:27:32.8) and Brittany Berry (2:32:38.1) of Guelph, Jeffrey Cunningham (1:44:27.9) of Campbellville, Caroline Nowak (2:13:08.8) of Puslinch and GTP’s Madeleine Kennedy (1:34:17.9).

Richard Howard of North York took top spot in the sprint duathlon with a clocking of 1:26:00.0.

He was followed by Cameron Mitchell of Markham in second in 1:26:25.0 and Ricardo Mansueto of Mount Albert in third in 1:26:55.9.

Carolynne Simons of Mississauga was top female finisher in 15th in 1:38:32.0.

Next event in the series is Guelph Lake One set for June 16 and 17. It features an Olympic triathlon, Olympic duathlon and try-a-tri June 16 and sprint triathlon and sprint duathlon June 17.
