Storm collapse in third in loss to Greyhounds

SAULT STE. MARIE – The Guelph Storm yielded five unanswered goals in the third period to fall 7-5 to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in OHL play Friday night at the Essar Centre.

The Storm led 3-1 at the end of the first period and 5-2 after the second before the third-period rampage by the Greyhounds. Sault Ste. Marie outshot the Storm 41-27 including a 20-10 margin in the third period.

The Greyhounds failed to score on their two power plays, the only power plays of the game.

James McEwan scored twice for the Storm while Quinn Hanna, Matt Hotchkiss and Garrett McFadden added single goals. Liam Hawel assisted on two of the goals while single assists went to Hotchkiss, McFadden, Albert Michnac, Luke Burghardt and Nick Deakin-Poot.

Blake Speers had a pair of goals for Sault Ste. Marie while Colton White, Zachary Senyshyn, Boris Katchouk, Barrett Hayton and Jack Kopacka also scored. Conor Timmins had three assists and Katchouk and former Storm defenceman Noah Carroll had two apiece.

Liam Herbst took the loss in net for the Storm while Matthew Villalta claimed the win for Sault Ste. Marie in relief of starter Joseph Raaymakers who gave up three goals on five shots in the first 7:44 of the game. Villalta faced 22 shots.

Sault Ste. Marie is tied with the Erie Otters for second in the Western Conference at 37-13-2-1. The Otters, at 37-10-2-1, have three games in hand. The London Knights lead at 36-9-3-4.

The Storm is 10th in the conference at 18-28-3-2. Top eight qualify for the playoffs and the Flint Firebirds are eighth at 24-21-1-4 and are 12 points ahead of the Storm.

The Storm and Firebirds are to meet Sunday at 4 p.m. at Flint’s Dort Federal Event Center.
