Storm connects early for win over Battalion

GUELPH – The Guelph Storm scored three times in the first period on their way to a 6-2 victory over the North Bay Battalion Friday night at the Sleeman Centre.

The Storm grabbed the lead in the opening minute of the game and never gave it up. The locals were up 3-0 at the end of the first period and 4-2 at the end of the second.

Isaac Ratcliffe fired in two goals for Guelph while single markers were netted by Matt Hotchkiss, Nate Schnarr, James McEwan and Ryan Merkley. Hotchkiss, Liam Hawel, Alexey Toropchenko and Cam Hillis each had two assists while Merkley, Schnarr, Barret Kirwin and Cedric Ralph had one apiece.

Riley Bruce and Brett McKenzie scored for North Bay while assists were awarded to Cam Dineen, Kyle Potts, Jesse Saban and Luke Burghardt.

The Storm outshot North Bay 40-35 while both teams were scoreless on their lone power play.

Anthony Popovich was the winning netminder for the Storm while Julian Sime took the loss for the Battalion.

The Storm moves into a tie for second in the Midwest Division with the Owen Sound Attack. Owen Sound has two games in hand. Kitchener Rangers lead the division at 11-6-1-0 and are followed by Owen Sound at 9-5-0-2, the Storm at 9-7-0-2, Erie Otters at 8-8-2-1 and London Knights at 7-9-2-0.

North Bay drops to 6-11-2-0.

The Storm is to host the Sudbury Wolves (6-10-4-0) Sunday at 2 p.m.
