Storm connects for another 2-1 victory

SAGINAW, Mich. – The Guelph Storm posted their second consecutive 2-1 victory when they edged the Saginaw Spirit in Ontario Hockey League play Saturday night at the Dow Event Center.

The Storm had defeated the Hamilton Bulldogs by an identical score Friday night at the Sleeman Centre.

Saturday, Isaac Ratcliffe of the Storm scored once in each of the first and second periods before the Spirit netted their goal in the third.

His first goal of the game came on a power play two and a half minutes into the game. Nate Schnarr and Liam Hawel assisted on the play.

Ratcliffe fired home the eventual game-winner midway through the second with help from Schnarr.

Damien Giroux closed the gap to a single goal when he tallied for Saginaw with just less than a minute and a half to go in the third period. Keaton Middleton and Marcus Crawford picked up assists.

That goal ruined the shutout bid by Storm netminder Anthony Popovich. He stopped 31 shots.

Evan Cormier faced 30 shots in Saginaw’s net.

The Storm went 1-for-2 on the power play and held the Spirit scoreless on two power plays.

The win lifts the Storm to 5-5-0-1, good for third in the Midwest Division, while Saginaw falls to 2-6-1-0. The Spirit are fifth in the West Division.

The Storm are to complete their three-in-three weekend with a game against the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (8-2-2-0) at Sault Ste. Marie’s Essar Centre Sunday at 2:07 p.m.
