Storm deals Burghardt, Moncada and Rhodes
GUELPH – The Guelph Storm swung a pair of deals Tuesday.
The Storm, looking to improve on missing the Ontario Hockey League playoffs two consecutive years, arranged trades with the North Bay Battalion and Sudbury Wolves.
Guelph acquired forward Zach Poirier, defenceman Mark Shoemaker and a conditional draft pick from North Bay for centres Luke Burghardt and Luke Moncada.
The Storm also traded overage defenceman Kyle Rhodes to the Sudbury Wolves for a conditional fourth-round pick.
Poirier, a 5- foot-11, 194-pound forward, was the Battalion’s first pick (14th overall) in the 2014 OHL draft. In three seasons in North Bay, Poirier collected 38 goals and 25 assists in 183 regular-season games and three points in 25 playoff games. “Zach plays the game hard and physical,” Storm general manager and head coach George Burnett said in a press release. “He will certainly add much-needed strength to our right side and is capable of producing offence on a regular basis for the Storm. Zach brings valuable international experience and most importantly 25 games of OHL playoff experience including a trip to the Eastern Conference final in 2015.”
The 6-foot-2 Shoemaker was picked in the 11th round (210th overall) by the Battalion in the 2013 OHL draft and was also taken in the sixth round (180th overall) of the 2016 NHL draft by the San Jose Sharks. He has five goals and 29 assists in 174 regular-season games in the OHL and also has three assists in 11 playoff games.
“Mark is a big, strong, mobile, puck-moving defenceman that battles and compete very effectively along the wall and in front of the net,” Burnett said. “Both players are highly motivated to have breakout seasons to earn pro opportunities.”
Burghardt was picked in the sixth round (120th overall) in the 2014 OHL draft by the Storm. In 173 games for the Storm, Burghardt had 27 goals and 31 assists.
Moncada, picked in the third round (42nd overall) of the 2016 OHL draft by the Storm, played 37 games last season, his rookie season, and had five assists.
