Storm edged by Sting in overtime

GUELPH – Adam Ruzicka’s goal after almost three minutes of overtime lifted the Sarnia Sting to a 4-3 victory over the Guelph Storm in OHL play Sunday night at the Sleeman Centre.

The goal, Ruzicka’s second of the game and 17th of the season, gave the Storm its third loss in four days and put an end to a close match that neither team led by more than a goal.

The Storm had the only goal of the first period and the teams were tied 2-2 after the second. Sarnia went ahead again early in the third, but the Storm tallied about 10 minutes later to force the overtime.

Isaac Ratcliffe, Garrett McFadden and Ryan Merkley had a goal apiece for the Storm while Liam Hawel had two assists and Owen Lalonde, Keegan Stevenson, Barret Kirwin and Dmitri Samorukov had one apiece.

Ruzicka had his two goals for Sarnia while Curtis Egert and Jamieson Rees also scored. Theo Calvas assisted on two of the goals while Ryan McGregor, Jordan Ernst, Braden Henderson and Drake Rymsha each had one assist.

The Storm was outshot 41-28 and both teams were scoreless on three power plays.

Anthony Popovich took the OT loss in net for the hosts while Justin Fazio picked up the win for Sarnia.

The Storm is third in the Midwest Division at 10-9-1-2 while the win moves Sarnia to the top of the West Division at 18-4-1-0.

The Storm is to host the Central Division-leading Barrie Colts (13-6-1-1) Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre.
