Storm edged in second game of series with Kitchener

KITCHENER – A goal by Kole Sherwood with seven and a half minutes to go in the third period lifted the Kitchener Rangers to a 2-1 victory over the Guelph Storm in OHL playoff action Sunday at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium.

The win gave Kitchener a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven Western Conference quarter-final series.

The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period before a scoreless second.

Cam Hillis opened the scoring for the Storm in the second minute of the game. Mark Shoemaker and Alexey Toropchenko drew assists on the goal.

Givani Smith’s power-play goal just over eight minutes later pulled the Rangers even. Logan Brown assisted on both goals for the hosts while single assists were awarded to Adam Mascherin and Nick McHugh.

The Storm outshot Kitchener 42-32, but were scoreless on both of their power plays. Kitchener scored on its lone power play.

Anthony Popovich took the loss in net for the Storm while Mario Culina collected the win for Kitchener.

Second game of the series is set for Tuesday at the Sleeman Centre. Game time is 7 p.m.
