Storm nipped by Greyhounds in shootout

SAULT STE. MARIE – Jack Kopacka’s goal in a shootout lifted the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds to a 4-3 victory over the Guelph Storm in Ontario Hockey League play Saturday night at Sault Ste. Marie’s Essar Centre.

The Greyhounds led the see-saw battle 2-1 at the end of the first period before the Storm shot ahead with two goals in the second. Sault Ste. Marie pulled even with a goal in the opening minute of the third period.

Isaac Ratcliffe scored twice for the Storm while Givani Smith had the other goal. Cam Hillis had two assists while Owen Lalonde, Liam Hawel and James McEwan each had one.

Tim Gettinger, Morgan Frost and Barrett Hayton connected for the regulation-time goals for Sault Ste. Marie. Noah Carroll assisted on all three goals while Hayton, Rasmus Sandin and Frost collected one assist apiece.

The Greyhounds outshot the Storm 42-41 and went 1-for-4 on their power play while the Storm was scoreless on three power plays.

Anthony Popovich was charged with the shootout loss in net for the Storm while Matthew Villalta picked up the win in the Greyhounds’ net.

The game came two weeks after the Greyhounds clouted the Storm 7-1 in league play at the Sleeman Centre.

The Greyhounds are the top team in the OHL with a 32-3-2-0 record and .892 winning percentage. The Storm is second in the Midwest Division at 18-13-1-3, good for a .571 winning percentage.

The Storm is to complete the 2017 segment of its schedule Sunday with a 2 p.m. game against the Sudbury Wolves (10-21-5-0) at the Sudbury Community Arena.
