Storm nipped by Otters, they’ll meet again Monday
ERIE, Pa. – The Erie Otters scored the first three goals of the game and then hung on to edge the Guelph Storm 5-4 in Ontario Hockey League play Sunday at the Erie Insurance Arena.
The Storm never led in the game as they trailed 2-0 at the end of the first period and 3-1 after the second.
Scoring for the Storm were James McEwan, Nate Schnarr, Alexey Toropchenko and Dmitri Samorukov. Ryan Merkley and Isaac Ratcliffe each had two assists while Schnarr, Samorukov and Zach Poirier had one apiece.
Alex Gritz had a pair of goals for Erie while singletons were added by Hayden Fowler, Kyle Maksimovich and Owen Headrick. Patrick Fellows and Troy Lajeunesse collected two assists each while Christian Girhiny, Kurtis Henry and Luke Beamish had one each.
The Otters outshot the Storm 43-21 and went 1-for-3 on their power play while the locals went 2-for-4.
Anthony Popovich was charged with the loss in the Guelph net while Anand Oberoi picked up the win for Erie.
The Storm is seventh in the Western Conference at 27-22-2-4, good for 60 points. They’re six points behind the fourth-place London Knights (31-21-2-2), three behind the fifth-place Owen Sound Attack (28-20-2-5), two behind the sixth-place Saginaw Spirit (27-20-8-0) and three ahead of the eighth-place Windsor Spitfires (26-24-3-2). The Otters (17-29-7-3) are ninth.
The Storm and Otters are to play again Monday at the Sleeman Centre. Game time is 2 p.m.
