Storm nipped in overtime by Owen Sound

OWEN SOUND – Nick Suzuki’s goal in overtime gave the Owen Sound Attack a 6-5 victory over the Guelph Storm in Ontario Hockey League play Saturday night at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre.

The teams had battled evenly throughout the game with neither going ahead by more than a goal. The teams scored twice each in the first period, once each in the second and twice each in the third, Givani Smith’s goal for the Storm with four seconds to go in regulation time forcing the overtime.

That goal, Smith’s third of the game, tied the score 26 seconds after a goal by Owen Sound’s Cordell James.

Nate Schnarr and Barret Kirwin also scored for the Storm while Liam Hawel, James McEwan, Albert Michnac and Garrett McFadden each had two assists and Isaac Ratcliffe had one.

Suzuki had a hat trick for Owen Sound while the other goals were scored by Zachary Roberts, Kevin Hancock and James.

Owen Sound outshot the Storm 41-26, but was scoreless on three power plays while the Storm scored on its only power play.

Anthony Popovich started in goal for the Storm and yielded two goals on 16 shots in the first period. Liam Herbst played the rest of the game and took the loss as he gave up four goals on 25 shots.

Emanuel Vella was in net for Owen Sound and he picked up the win.

The result leaves Owen Sound at 42-15-2-2 and in fourth place in the Western Conference while the Storm is 10th at 20-25-4-2 with seven games to go.

The Storm is to play the London Knights at London Tuesday. Game time is 7 p.m.

After that game, five of Guelph’s final six games will be played at the Sleeman Centre.
