Storm nips Mississauga in preseason shootout

MISSISSAUGA – Cam Hillis lifted the Guelph Storm to a 4-3 victory over the Mississauga Steelheads when he scored in a shootout in OHL preseason play Saturday night at the Hershey Centre.

Hillis was the lone player to score in the shootout.

The teams had been tied 1-1 at the end of the first period before the Storm scored the only goal of the second.

A pair of goals by Mississauga’s Owen Tippett less than a minute apart gave the host Steelheads the lead early in the third before the Storm’s Matt Hotchkiss scored a shorthanded goal midway through the period to tie it up.

Barrett Kirwin and Ryan Merkley scored the other goals for the Storm, both on power plays.

Nick Deakin-Poot, Anthony Aguanno, Garrett McFadden and Hillis each had an assist in the game.

Ryan McLeod hit for Mississauga’s other goal in the second minute of the first period while Austin Osmanski had two assists and Nic Hague, former Storm forward Albert Michnac and McLeod each had one.

The result evens the Storm’s preseason record at 1-1-0-0.

The Storm and Steelheads are to play again Monday at the Sleeman Centre. Game time is 2 p.m.
