Storm rallies in third to top Kingston

KINGSTON – The Guelph Storm struck for three goals in the third period to claim a 4-2 victory over the Kingston Frontenacs in Ontario Hockey League play Friday night at the Rogers K-Rock Centre.

The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period before a scoreless second.

Kingston shot ahead on an unassisted goal by Jakob Brahaney at 5:28 of the third.

Isaac Ratcliffe both tied the score and put the Storm ahead for good with two consecutive goals. The first came about four and a half minutes after the Frontenacs went ahead and the game-winner, a shorthanded marker, followed about four and a half minutes later.

Dmitri Samorukov added an insurance goal into an empty net with 15 seconds to play.

Cedric Ralph had scored in the first period for the Storm after Jason Robertson had scored an unassisted goal for Kingston to open the scoring.

Garrett McFadden assisted on three of Guelph’s goals while Liam Hawel had two assists and Ryan Merkley had one.

Kingston outshot the Storm 37-35 and both teams went scoreless on their only power play.

Anthony Popovich collected the win in net for Guelph while Brendan Bonello took the loss for Kingston.

The win lifts the Storm’s record to 20-17-1-3 while Kingston falls to 20-14-3-3. Guelph is seventh in the Western Conference, one point behind the Saginaw Spirit (21-15-3-0) and three behind both the Windsor Spitfires (22-15-2-1) and London Knights (22-17-2-1).

The Storm is to wrap up its eastern swing with a game against the Ottawa 67’s (17-19-2-2) at Ottawa’s TD Place Sunday at 2 p.m.
