Storm returns to league play with victory

GUELPH – The Guelph Storm returned from their Christmas break with a 3-1 victory over the Peterborough Petes in Ontario Hockey League play Thursday night at the Sleeman Centre.

The Storm won it with a pair of goals early in the second period as all the scoring in the game was complete by the five-minute mark of the second period.

The teams had scored once each in the first five minutes of the game.

The Storm never trailed in the game as Isaac Ratcliffe opened the scoring on a power play at 2:23 of the first. Nikita Korostelev pulled Peterborough even on a power play just less than two minutes later.

Ratcliffe’s second of the game and 16th of the season proved to be the winning goal as it gave the hosts the lead two minutes into the second. Tag Bertuzzi added an insurance marker 2:15 later.

Cam Hills, Alexey Toropchenko, Owen Lalonde, Mark Shoemaker and Garrett McFadden each had an assist for the Storm.

Jonathan Ang and Matthew Timms assisted on Peterborough’s goal.

Anthony Popovich stopped 28 shots in the Guelph net for the win while Dylan Wells had 30 saves for Peterborough.

The Storm (18-13-1-2) is tied with the London Knights (18-14-2-1) for second in the Midwest Division and has a game in hand on the Knights. Kitchener Rangers (22-11-2-0) lead the division while the Owen Sound Attack (14-14-1-4) is fourth and Erie Otters (11-18-5-1) are fifth.
