Storm skates away with Game 2 victory

GUELPH – Anthony Popovich turned aside 22 shots to pick up the shutout as the Guelph Storm dropped the Kitchener Rangers 7-0 Sunday at the Sleeman Centre in the second game of their Ontario Hockey League Western Conference quarter-final.

The Storm has won both games played so far in the best-of-seven series.

The hosts scored four times in the first period and added two more goals in the second.

Liam Hawel led the Storm with a pair of goals while single markers were netted by Nick Suzuki, Domenico Commisso, Fedor Gordeev, Isaac Ratcliffe and Alexey Toropchenko. Nate Schnarr assisted on four of the goals while Toropchenko had two assists and Ratcliffe, MacKenzie Entwistle, Pavel Gogolev, Sean Durzi, Hawel and Dmitri Samorukov each had one.

The Storm outshot Kitchener 34-22 and went 2-for-4 on their power play while the Rangers were scoreless on two power plays.

Luke Richardson was charged with the loss in the Kitchener net. He had 19 saves in the first two periods before being replaced by Lucas Pfeil who had eight saves in the third.

After starting with two games at the Sleeman Centre, the series shifts to the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium for games Tuesday and Thursday. Game time for both games is 7 p.m.

In the other Western Conference quarter-finals, the London Knights lead Windsor Spitfires 2-0, Saginaw Spirit leads Sarnia Sting 2-0 and Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and Owen Sound Attack are tied 1-1.

In the Eastern Conference quarter-finals, the Sudbury Wolves lead the Mississauga Steelheads 3-0, Ottawa 67’s lead Hamilton Bulldogs 2-0, Oshawa Generals lead Peterborough Petes 2-0 and Niagara Ice Dogs and North Bay Battalion are tied 1-1.
