Storm slips by Barrie in overtime
GUELPH – A goal by Cedric Ralph 55 seconds into overtime gave the Guelph Storm a 5-4 victory over the Barrie Colts in Ontario Hockey League play Friday night at the Sleeman Centre.
That goal put the Storm ahead for the first time in the game on the team’s Pink the Rink Night.
The teams were tied 3-3 at the end of the first period, the Storm needing a pair of power-play goals in the final nine minutes of the period to pull even after Barrie shot ahead 3-1 in the first seven minutes of the game.
Barrie’s Ryan Suzuki had the only goal of the second while Barret Kirwin’s unassisted goal in the second minute of the third period pulled the Storm even.
Cam Hillis had two goals for the Storm while Isaac Ratcliffe also scored. Ratcliffe, Ryan Merkley and Garrett McFadden each had two assists while Mark Woolley and James McEwan each had one.
Curtis Douglas, Jason Willms and Alexey Lipanov netted single goals for Barrie while assists were awarded to Willms, Aidan Brown, Douglas, Suzuki and Jaden Peca.
The Colts outshot the Storm 44-26 and were scoreless on five power plays while the Storm scored on two of their three power plays.
Anthony Popovich collected the win in net for the Storm while Leo Lazarev was charged with the loss for Barrie.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Storm as it improved their record to 11-9-1-2 while Central Division-leading Barrie fell to 13-6-2-1.
The game was also the Storm’s first game of a three-in-three weekend as they’re to play the Owen Sound Attack (13-8-0-2) at Owen Sound Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and host the London Knights (11-11-2-0) Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre.
