Storm slips by Battalion in overtime

NORTH BAY – Cedric Ralph’s goal in overtime lifted the Guelph Storm to a 3-2 victory over the North Bay Battalion in Ontario Hockey League play Sunday at North Bay Memorial Gardens.

That goal allowed the Storm to pick up the win in a game they had led by two goals with three minutes to go in regulation time.

Barret Kirwin had scored twice in regulation time for Guelph, the first goal coming on an unassisted effort while the Storm killed off a penalty with just under six minutes to go in the opening period. His second was a power-play marker midway through the third.

However, North Bay battled back to force the game into overtime with two goals 1:46 apart in the final three minutes of the third. Bad Chenier scored on a power play with 2:43 to go and Justin Brazeau tied it with 57 seconds to play.

Dmitri Samorukov, Owen Lalonde, Garrett McFadden and Kirwin collected assists for the Storm.

Adam McMaster assisted on both goals for North Bay while Jesse Saban and Jake Henderson each had one assist.

The Storm had five shots in the overtime and outshot their hosts 34-29. They also went 1-for-9 on the power play while North Bay went 1-for-6.

Anthony Popovich had 27 saves for the win in net for the Storm while former Guelph Hurricanes goaltender Christian Propp had 31 saves in the Battalion net.

The Storm is sixth in the Western Conference at 25-21-1-3 for 54 points. They’re two points behind both the London Knights (26-20-2-2) and Saginaw Spirit (25-19-6-0), one up on the Owen Sound Attack (23-19-2-5) and four ahead of the Windsor Spitfires (23-23-2-2).

North Bay (23-21-6-1) is tied for fifth in the Eastern Conference with the Oshawa Generals (25-23-3-0).

The Storm is to play the Spitfires at Windsor Thursday at 7:05 p.m. and host Saginaw Friday at 7:30 p.m. and London Sunday at 2 p.m.
