Storm starts season with loss in shootout

GUELPH – The Guelph Storm was handed a 4-3 setback in a shootout by the Sarnia Sting to open their Ontario Hockey League season Friday night at the Sleeman Centre.

A shootout was required after regulation time and a five-minute 3-on-3 overtime period didn’t produce a winner.

The Sting, who shot first in the shootout, received goals from Drake Rymsha and Anthony Salinitri while Isaac Ratcliffe scored for the Storm.

The Storm never trailed before the shootout. The hosts scored first and led 2-1 at the end of the first period before Sarnia tied it with the lone goal of the second. The teams scored once each in the third, the Storm scoring first.

Alexey Toropchenko, Liam Hawel and Ryan Merkley had a goal apiece for the Storm while assists were awarded to Merkley, Garrett McFadden, Tag Bertuzzi, Cam Hillis and Toropchenko.

Salinitri, Rymsha and Connor Schlichting scored the goals for Sarnia. Adam Ruzicka had two assists while single assists were awarded to Hugo Leufvenius, Jordan Ernst, Sean Josling and Rymsha.

Justin Fazio picked up the shootout win for the Sting while Anthony Popovich took the shootout loss for the Storm.

The Storm outshot the Sting 35-24, but didn’t have a shot on net in the overtime.

Sarnia went 1-for-5 on its power play while the Storm went 1-for-9.

The Storm had Cole Ceci dressed as the back-up goaltender after they acquired him from the Hamilton Bulldogs for a conditional ninth-round draft pick earlier in the day. Ceci had a 2-3-1 record, 3.84 goals-against average and .800 save percentage in nine games for Hamilton last season. He had been selected in the 10th round, 184th overall, of the 2014 OHL draft by the Belleville Bulls before their move to Hamilton.

The Storm is to play the Windsor Spitfires (2-0-0-0) Sunday at 2:05 p.m. at Windsor’s WFCU Centre.
