Storm stung by Sting’s shorthanded goals

SARNIA – A pair of shorthanded goals sparked the Sarnia Sting to a 6-1 victory over the Guelph Storm in OHL play Saturday night at Sarnia’s Progressive Auto Sales Arena.

Franco Sproviero hit for both of the shorthanded goals, his first two goals of the season. They included the eventual game-winner at 17:39 of the first period that came 79 seconds after the Sting had opened the scoring. Sproviero’s second one came with 25 seconds to go in the second period.

Sarnia led 2-0 after the first period and 5-1 after the second.

Liam Hawel scored for the Storm at 15:58 of the second period after Sarnia had built a 4-0 lead. Keegan Stevenson and Owen Lalonde assisted on the goal.

The Sting received single goals from Cameron Hough, Sean Josling, Brady Hinz and Drake Rymsha. Jordan Ernst assisted on two of the goals while Sproviero, Curtis Egert, Anthony Salinitri, Theo Calvas, Nick Grima, Ryan McGregor, Jordan Kyrou and Hugo Leufvenius each had one assist.

Justin Fazio made 39 saves in the Sarnia net for the win while Cole Ceci was tagged with the loss in the Storm net. He made 32 saves in his first start and second appearance for the Storm.

The Storm outshot the Sting 40-38, but was scoreless on five power plays while Sarnia was held without a goal on its lone power play.

The Storm is tied for third in the Midwest Division with the Erie Otters. The Storm’s at 3-5-0-1 while Erie is at 3-6-1-0. Sarnia leads the West Division at 8-1-0-0.

The loss was the third consecutive setback for the Storm and their fourth in five games.

Next outing is set for Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre when they’re to host the Hamilton Bulldogs (4-1-1-2) in their first game of a three-in-there weekend. They’re to play the Saginaw Spirit (1-5-1-0) at Saginaw Saturday at 7:05 p.m. and the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (7-1-1-0) at Sault Ste. Marie Oct. 22 at 2:07 p.m.
