Storm surges in third to topple Bulldogs

HAMILTON – The Guelph Storm struck for four goals in the third period to double the Hamilton Bulldogs 6-3 in Ontario Hockey League play Wednesday night at FirstOntario Centre.

The Storm led 2-1 at the end of the first period before the Bulldogs surged ahead 3-2 by the end of the second.

Nate Schnarr tied the score on a power play at 1:36 of the third period with his third goal of the game.

Dmitri Samorukov followed with the game-winner five minutes later, also on a power play, and Givani Smith added an insurance goal 25 seconds later.

Alexey Toropchenko scored the other goal for Guelph midway through the third.

Isaac Ratcliffe and Ryan Merkley each had two assists while single assists were awarded to Samorukov, Garrett McFadden, Schnarr, Liam Hawel, Mark Shoemaker and Cedric Ralph.

Nicholas Caamano, MacKenzie Entwistle and Ryan Moore had a goal apiece for Hamilton. Assists went to Entwistle, Kade Landry, Brandon Saigeon and Isaac Nurse.

The Bulldogs outshot the Storm 33-28 while Guelph went 2-for-4 on its power play and Hamilton never had a power play in the game.

Anthony Popovich picked up the win in the Storm net while Kaden Fulcher was charged with the loss for Hamilton.

The Storm is second in the Midwest Division at 15-10-2-2 and they trail division-leading Kitchener Rangers (18-10-2-0) by five points. Hamilton leads the East Division at 16-7-3-3.

The win was the third in a row for the Storm and fifth in six games.

The Storm and Owen Sound Attack () are to play for the third time in two weeks when they meet Friday at the Sleeman Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
