Storm veterans show off scoring talent

GUELPH – The Guelph Storm veterans displayed their scoring prowess Tuesday during a pair of scrimmages as the team hit the ice for the first time at its training camp.

A total of 20 goals were scored in the scrimmages at the Sleeman Centre and 13 were netted by returnees.

Left winger Matt Hotchkiss led all scorers as he hit for a total of five goals for Team White in 9-2 and 6-3 victories over Team Red.

He had a hat trick in the morning’s 9-2 win while centre Cedric Ralph had a pair of goals. Defenceman Garrett McFadden also scored as did rookies centre Tag Bertuzzi, right winger Alexei Toropchenko and defenceman Anthony Aguanno.

Team Red got goals from returning defencemen Quinn Hanna and centre James McEwan.

Matt Hotchkiss scored twice in the evening’s 6-3 win while other goals were scored by returning forwards Givani Smith and Isaac Ratcliffe and a pair of rookies, right winger Dimello Smith and left winger Dennis Golovatchev.

McEwan and rookie centre Keegan Stevenson and rookie blueliner Bradon Caruso had the other goals.

The goaltenders played approximately half a game in each of the scrimmages. Nico Daws played for White in both games and Richard Ledek played for Red in both games. Nick Haas played for White in the first game and Red in the second while James Walker played for Red in the first game and White in the second.

The players will be back on the ice for two more scrimmages Wednesday. They’re to go at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The Storm is to open its preseason with a game against the Hamilton Bulldogs Friday at the Morgan Firestone arena in Ancaster. Game time is 7 p.m.
