Storm yields three in third in loss to Windsor

WINDSOR – The Guelph Storm kept the Windsor Spitfires scoreless for two periods, but the hosts broke out for three goals in the third for a 3-1 win over the Storm in OHL play Saturday night at the WFCU Centre.

After a scoreless first period, rookie Ryan Merkley scored his 10th goal of the season for the Storm midway through the second period. Givani Smith assisted on the goal.

The Spitfires rallied in the third for the win on goals by Mikhail Sergachev at 5:51, Jeremiah Addison at 10:08 and Luke Boka at 17:55.

Windsor outshot Guelph 31-16 while neither team recorded a power-play goal, Windsor on two chances and the Storm on three.

Michael DiPietro was the winning goaltender for the Spitfires while Anthony Popovich was charged with the loss.

Windsor secured a playoff berth with the win.

The result left the Spitfires in fifth in the Western Conference at 35-13-5-3 while the Storm is 10th at 19-31-3-2.

The Storm has 13 games to go in its regular season and is to host the Flint Firebirds (27-23-1-4) Monday at 2 p.m.
