Storm yields two in third to fall to Flint Firebirds

FLINT – The Guelph Storm surrendered a pair of goals in the third period as they were doubled 4-2 by the Flint Firebirds in OHL play at the Dort Federal Event Center Sunday.

The Storm never led in the game as Flint was ahead 1-0 after the first period and 2-1 after the second.

Ryan Merkley and Nate Schnarr hit for a goal apiece for Guelph while Albert Michnac, Merkley and Garrett McFadden each had one assist.

Ryan Moore had a hat trick for Flint to raise his seasonal total to 32 goals. He also assisted on Maurizio Colella’s goal.

The teams each took 39 shots and both were 1-for-3 on the power play.

Liam Herbst was charged with the loss in the Guelph net while Garrett Forrest picked up the win for Flint.

With the win, the Firebirds moved to seventh in the Western Conference at 26-21-1-4. They’re a point ahead of the Sarnia Sting (25-22-5-1) in the race for the final playoff berth in the conference. If the Storm fails to make the playoffs for a second consecutive year, it’ll be the first time that has happened since the franchise moved to Guelph for the 1991-92 season.

The loss leaves Guelph at 18-29-3-2. The Storm has 16 games to go in its regular season and is 15 points behind Sarnia. The Storm and Sarnia are to clash Wednesday at Sarnia. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
