Storm’s comeback attempt falls a goal short

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – The Guelph Storm surrendered three goals in the first 11 minutes of the game as they were edged 4-3 by the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in Ontario Hockey League play Friday night at the GFL Memorial Gardens.

The Storm scored the only goal of the second period, but the Greyhounds restored their three-goal lead in the opening minute of the third. The Guelph squad made it close with two goals later in the third, but couldn’t net the equalizer in the final 6:03 of the game.

Barret Kirwin, Cam Hillis and Domenico Commisso scored a goal apiece for the Storm while Nate Schnarr assisted on two of the goals. Getting one assist apiece were Cedric Ralph, Zach Poirier, Dmitri Samorukov and Ryan Merkley.

Cole MacKay, Brett Jacklin, Alex Johnston and Keeghan Howdeshell each had a goal for Sault Ste. Marie. Mac Hollowell and Joe Carroll each had two assists while single assists were awarded to Morgan Frost, Ryan Roth and Jacob LeGuerrier.

The teams each had 32 shots on net. The Greyhounds outshot the Storm 20-9 in the first period and the Storm outshot the Greyhounds 17-4 in the third.

The teams also both went 1-for-5 on their power play.

Nico Daws took the loss for the Storm despite yielding one goal. He replaced starter Anthony Popovich after Sault Ste. Marie’s third goal. Matthew Villalta was the winning netminder for the hosts as he played the entire game.

The Storm is second in the Midwest Division at 14-8-3-3 and they trail the division-leading London Knights (21-4-2-0) by 10 points and they’re one point ahead of third-place Owen Sound Attack (15-11-1-2). Sault Ste. Marie leads the West Division at 19-7-4-1.

The Storm will be looking to break a Saturday losing streak when they tangle with the Sudbury Wolves Saturday at the Sudbury Community Arena. Game time is 4:05 p.m. The Storm has lost six consecutive Saturday games since a 6-2 win over the Flint Firebirds at Flint’s Dort Federal Event Center Oct. 6.

The Wolves (18-8-1-1) are tied for the lead in the Central Division with the Niagara IceDogs (17-7-4-0).
