Storm’s comeback foiled with overtime loss to Flint

GUELPH — After falling behind by three goals, the Guelph Storm battled back to pull even with the Flint Firebirds only to surrender the deciding goal in the first minute of overtime Friday night at the Sleeman Centre.

Kole Sherwood’s goal 35 seconds into the extra period gave Flint the victory.

The goal was Sherwood’s second of the game. His first gave Flint a 3-0 lead at 7:03 of the second. It followed a pair of goals by Ryan Moore, his first early in the first period and his second early in the second.

The Storm started its comeback midway through the game on a goal by Isaac Ratcliffe. Albert Michnac and Luke Burghardt tallied 53 seconds apart with less than nine minutes to go in regulation time to lift the Storm even with the Firebirds.

Michnac, Nate Schnarr, Ratcliffe, Dmitri Samorukov, Liam Hawel and Nolan Makkonen each had one assist for Guelph.

Flint outshot the Storm 40-29. Liam Herbst took the loss in the Guelph net while Garrett Forrest collected the win for Flint.

The Storm went 2-for-5 on its power play while Flint was scoreless on two power plays.

With 19 games to go in its regular season, the Storm (17-27-3-2) is 10th in the Western Conference. Guelph trails ninth-place Saginaw Spirit (19-23-6-2) by seven points and eighth-place Flint (23-21-1-3) by 11. Top eight qualify for the playoffs.

The Storm’s next four games are to be on the road as they’re to play the North Bay Battalion (19-26-3-1) at North Bay Thursday at 7 p.m., Soo Greyhounds (34-12-2-1) at Sault Ste. Marie Feb. 10, the Firebirds at Flint Feb. 12 and the Sarnia Sting (24-20-5-1) at Sarnia Feb. 15.
