Third-period goals keep Patriots alive in playoffs

MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots scored twice in the third period to stay alive in their Provincial Junior Hockey League North Conference final with a 3-1 victory over the Alliston Hornets Tuesday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.

Alliston leads the best-of-seven series 3-1.

The Hornets opened the scoring when Devon Gillham scored at 2:57 of the first period before the Patriots battled back to tie it on a goal by Michael Stefanelli 11 minutes later.

The score remained tied until Ostop Mostowy hit on a power play for Mount Forest at 6:48 of the third.

Mitch Betts completed the scoring with an unassisted empty-netter with 46 seconds to go.

Ryan Maksymyk and Jack Vautour each had an assist for the hosts in the game.

The Hornets outshot the Patriots 36-33, but were scoreless on four power plays while Mount Forest went 1-for-6.

Mathieu Oullette picked up the win in net for the Patriots while Matthew Nixon was charged with the loss.

Fifth game of the series is to go Friday at Alliston’s New Tecumseth Recreation Centre.
