Thistles nipped by Buzz in playoff opener

ELORA – The Fergus Thistles dropped the critical first game of their best-of-three Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League West Division quarter-final playoff series Monday night when they were edged 8-7 by the Oakville Buzz at the Elora and District Community Centre.

The first period proved to be the difference as the Buzz grabbed the lead with just under seven and a half minutes to go in the period and they never relinquished it after that. The Thistles offset Oakville’s 4-1 advantage in scoring in the second period by outscoring the visitors by the same 4-1 margin in the third.

Oakville led 3-2 at the end of the first and 7-3 after the second thanks to a pair of power-play goals in the final three minutes of the period.

Zach Cameron had a game-high four goals for Fergus while Brett Harrison, Trent Spear and J.J. Swanston scored once apiece. Logan Cameron collected three assists while Spear had two and Kyle Deitweiler, Adam Lantz, Ryan Litt and Justin Beaulieu had one apiece.

Grant Paterson had a hat trick for Oakville and Jack Travassos added a pair of goals. Scoring once each were Conner Smith, Thomas MacDonald and Adam Brown. Ben Doherty was awarded three assists while Dawson Garcia, Paterson, Vincent Milantoni and goalie Ryan Fitzgerald had one each.

Fergus outshot Oakville 47-44 and went 2-for-8 on their power play while Oakville went 4-for-11.

Fitzgerald had the win in net for Oakville and Noah Nixon took the loss for the Thistles.

Next game in the series is set for Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Oakville’s Joshua’s Creek Arena.

If the Thistles win that match, the third and deciding game of the series is to be played in Elora Saturday starting at 7 p.m.
